77-Year-Old Transportation Company to Lay Off 179 Workers and Close Austell Facility

Parsec, LLC will permanently close its facility in Austell, Georgia, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing. As a result of the closure, 179 employees will be laid off.

Parsec, LLC to Permanently Close Austell Facility

Parsec, LLC, provides contract intermodal terminal management services across North America. According to a recent WARN filing, Parsec is closing its facility at 6000 Dr Luke Glenn Garrett, Jr. Memorial Hwy, Austell, GA 30106.

The company said the closure follows the loss of a key customer that supported the facility’s operations. The company even made extensive efforts to negotiate an ongoing business relationship. The layoffs at the facility will take effect on or about May 1, 2026.

The company has notified the employees about information regarding job placement, retraining, and other reemployment services available through the applicable state workforce agency and local one-stop career center.

About Parsec

The company was established in 1949, and its facilities support rail and freight transportation logistics. Parsec employs specialized teams to manage cargo movement and rail-terminal logistics.

Over the decades, Parsec has developed into a vital service provider in the intermodal transportation industry. The company specializes in providing terminal management services, handling a large percentage of Trailer on Flat Car (TOFC) and Container on Flat Car (COFC) freight.

The company’s activities include labor management in rail yards, handling heavy machinery such as cranes, among other activities, to maintain efficient rail yard operations.

The company operates in multiple locations in the U.S. and Canada, employing thousands.

In 2024, Parsec was acquired by Universal Logistics Holdings, Inc., a transportation and supply chain solutions provider. The acquisition integrated Parsec’s rail terminal management expertise into Universal Logistics’ portfolio of contract logistics services.

The permanent closure of the Austell facility is another step in the changes that are happening within the logistics and transportation service industry.
