Pineapple King Bakery Coming to San Mateo

The company’s new location is set to move into the former home of Shabuway Japanese Style Hot Pot

Pineapple King Bakery, a Bay Area bakery specializing in Hong Kong–style pineapple buns, is getting ready to open in San Mateo at 145 E. Third Avenue.

The company’s new location is set to move into the former home of Shabuway Japanese Style Hot Pot, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The San Mateo shop is scheduled to open later in 2026. While an exact date has not been announced, customers can expect Pineapple King’s signature pineapple buns with butter, as well as egg tarts, cocktail buns, and other Hong Kong–style pastries.

Pineapple King Bakery opened its first location in 2015 in San Francisco’s Sunset District, inspired by baked goods made by the founders’ uncle, Guo Chi Ng. The bakery quickly became known for its bolo bao, attracting customers from across the Bay Area who often travel to get the buns and sometimes bring them back on flights.

The Fremont location followed in 2023, expanding the brand’s reach into the East Bay. The new San Mateo location marks the bakery’s first presence on the Peninsula and aims to serve the growing demand for Hong Kong–style pastries in the area.

The menu focuses on soft milk buns topped with a sweet, crackly crust and filled with butter or other options such as pandan coconut butter, guava butter, or chocolate chip cookie variations. Egg tarts come in several styles, including croissant egg tarts, pandan croissant egg tarts, and salted egg pork floss tarts. Seasonal and gift items are also available, including the Ten Blessings New Year Gift Box and craft tart boxes.

This will be an excellent landing space for Pineapple King Bakery, offering Peninsula customers convenient access to its popular pastries. With a loyal following from its existing locations, the bakery continues its Bay Area expansion while maintaining the classic Hong Kong bakery experience that made it popular.
