What Now reported last week on Karaz Restaurant, the new restaurant from Sam Hellman-Mass, the restaurateur behind Suerte and Este, which is set to open in East Austin next year. The new Mediterranean restaurant, which will be helmed by Chef Alejandra Kuri, is not the only project Hellman-Mass currently has in the works, however.
As it happens, before the widespread coverage of Karaz started in the last two weeks, the Austin American-Statesman had already reported that Sam Hellman-Mass and chef-partner Fermín Núñez are planning to open a taqueria on a property recently acquired by Hellman-Mass, at 2002 Manor Road.
The site in question has been home to Hoover’s Cooking for 40 years, the coverage said, and for the moment Hellman-Mass is trying to avoid attracting attention of away from that restaurant’s long career.
“I don’t want to sap the energy from Hoover and jump over him,” Hellman-Mass in the coverage. (Hoover Alexander will close Hoover’s Cooking at the end of this spring.)
Still, the word is out: Hellman-Mass and Núñez are at work on a new taqueria—in addition to the exciting news about Karaz Restaurant.
