A historic site in Monrovia will soon be welcoming customers to dine. Viola’s will open at 512 S. Ivy Ave. Managing partner Casarah Gutierrez said they are hoping for an opening around Memorial Day weekend, though the timeline depends on construction progress.
The project was spearheaded by Saxony Design Build in collaboration with Experience CASA. Saxony purchased two of the oldest homes in Monrovia while adding a third to the property with plans to restore an renovate them. The project will include a boutique inn, and the center home will transform into Viola’s. The restaurant’s name is a nod to the previous owner’s grandmother, Viola.
The menu, which is still in development, will center around brunch and evening small plates. Gutierrez describes it as “French bistro meets Southern influence,” offering twists on classic dishes. The beverage program will feature beer, wine and curated cocktails.
The concept’s atmosphere will offer a “first date at Grandma’s” feel, Gutierrez said.
“It has a nostalgic yet elevated feel,” Gutierrez said. “Like you go on a first date and you’re trying to impress, but it’s familiar food and approachable. That’s the concept we’re going by.”
Gutierrez sees Viola’s as a way to bring a new concept to the community while preserving a historic element of the area.
“We’re really excited because we’re a landmark historic location in the city and it will be nice for people to enjoy a piece of Monrovia’s history,” Gutierrez said.
