Jersey Mike’s is set to open another location in the Greater Houston region, this time in the Houston Heights. According to a recently filed permit, Jersey Mike’s is expected to open in the Heights Marketplace at 436 W 19th St.
The permit details that the construction project consists of a tenant finish-out of a ‘second generation’ space in the shopping center into the new Jersey Mike’s Subs restaurant with new kitchen equipment, interior walls, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing finishes. Demolition and construction throughout the space is expected to start in mid-July and wrap up in mid-September. If all goes well with the $300,000 construction project, the new Jersey Mike’s should open by this fall.
At the helm of the opening is Hunter Jones, who was listed as the tenant on the permit. What Now Houston reached out to Jones and Jersey Mike’s CEO Brian Sommers, but did not hear back by the time of this publication.
The new Jersey Mike’s will further push Houston into a top spot for the international sandwich brand, which currently has nearly 20 locations in the area.
Jersey Mike’s started as Mike’s Subs in Point Pleasant, NJ, in 1956. In 1975, a 17-year-old Peter Cancro bought the pioneering sub shop with a loan from his coach. Cancro would rebrand the Mike’s Subs to Jersey Mike’s in 1987 and begin franchising, according to the Jersey Mike’s website. With a focus on authentic “Jersey” roots, the brand rapidly expanded through franchising.
