Costco is planning its first Oakland warehouse at the North Gateway Development Area of the former Oakland Army Base, according to The San Francisco Gate, becoming the city’s first Costco warehouse. In a social Media post, Oakland’s mayor, Barbara Lee, shared that, earlier this month, the Oakland City Council unanimously approved an exclusive negotiation agreement with the retailer, a step that allows the city and Costco to negotiate terms for the project over the next two years, with an option to extend the agreement for one additional year.
City officials will use the negotiation period to address contamination issues while gathering community input on traffic and environmental impacts. The city is also expected to work with AC Transit on potential bus service changes if the project advances.
The mayor also emphasized the project’s economic impact, noting that it will create jobs while generating tax revenue for City services.
“Not only does this mean easier bulk shopping, but it also brings 400+ high-quality jobs and $3 million in new annual tax revenue for City services. Who else is counting down the days?!”
Costco operates membership warehouse stores offering groceries and household goods. No opening timeline has been disclosed.
