Panda Express is testing a new Taiwanese-inspired menu item in select U.S. markets. The chain recently introduced its Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken as a limited-time regional offering and its debut walk-and-eat snack. A limited-edition collectible bucket designed in collaboration with Taiwanese American food creator and designer Frankie Gaw will be available beginning September 9.

According to GlobeNewswire, the new item is Panda Express’ interpretation of yán sū jī, a Taiwanese street food. It features dark meat chicken coated in a light and extra-crispy breading. The Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken is further tossed in a dry spice blend, which contains tamarind, onion, tomato, and garlic.

The item gets an American Chinese twist with a topping of fried kale and is served with house-made Chili Crisp Aioli on the side.

The snack is available as an entrée with a Plate, Bowl, or Family Meal at no additional cost.

Limited-Edition Bucket Coming to Select Locations

Panda Express partnered with Taiwanese American food creator, designer, and author Frankie Gaw of Little Fat Boy for the launch. Gaw designed the limited-edition collector bucket, taking inspiration from Taiwan’s night markets, classic American movie theaters, and Panda Express’ American Chinese history.

From September 9, diners at participating test locations can receive the limited-edition bucket as a gift with purchase. The bucket is available with the purchase of a large à la carte pail of Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken, while supplies last.

The press release shows that quantities are limited, and the offer is restricted to one redemption per order.

The offer is available in-store at participating locations and cannot be combined with Family Meals or other offers and discounts.

Currently, the new menu item is limited to participating U.S. locations. These are spread across Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago, Nashville, Phoenix, Orlando, and Reno.

Founded in 1983 by Andrew and Peggy Cherng, the company operates as a family-owned restaurant chain specializing in American Chinese cuisine. It operates more than 2,500 locations across the U.S. and has a presence in 11 international markets. Menu items feature The Original Orange Chicken and Honey Walnut Shrimp.
