Mad Greek Deli, a Westside Portland restaurant with nearly five decades of history, is set to cease operations. Owner Jake Marks announced that the restaurant at 18515 NW West Union Road will close November 28.
Mad Greek Deli to Close Westside Restaurant
Jake Marks shared through Facebook that the deli will shutter on November 28, with a farewell party planned from 11 a.m. until closing. The post added that the establishment will keep serving diners through the closing date.
According to its website, Mad Greek Deli has served the Portland community since 1977. The restaurant serves Greek and Mediterranean dishes made from scratch. Menu items include gyros, Greek salads, souvlaki, pizza, hummus, sandwiches, wings, and baklava. The Westside location also offers a 10-pound sandwich challenge.
Mad Greek Deli also operates a location at 1740 E. Burnside St. in the Buckman neighborhood.
Why Mad Greek Deli Is Closing
Marks said the building that houses the Westside restaurant has been sold. He also pointed to growing financial pressure, saying the lack of relief made it difficult to keep operating at the location.
Marks said he wanted to close the restaurant properly and make sure employees and vendors were taken care of. He added that the team had committed to staying through the final day of service.
Mad Greek Deli hopes to meet existing catering and event commitments through November 28 or work with customers on other arrangements. Gift cards will also be accepted through the closing date at the Westside outlet and can be redeemed at the East Side location.
According to Hoodline, the current closure is the second time the restaurant is leaving Westside. It previously operated in the Rock Creek area before closing the longtime location in 2015. After an absence of eight years, it came back to the Westside in 2023.
Eastside Location Remains Unaffected
The November closure will affect only the Westside outlet. The deli business’s East Burnside location at 1740 E Burnside St will keep serving patrons.
Marks said updates on future projects and pop-ups will be shared through Facebook and the business’s mailing list, suggesting more plans ahead.
