Plans to convert a 50-year-old garage/auto repair facility and a house into Social Studies Gastropub resurfaced this week. Owner Robin Camacho Group, LLC (Sound Food Group) got the necessary approvals to build the tavern, at 710 and 712 First St., three years ago, but never got around to the project, according to planning documents presented Wednesday to city planners.

“This project was put on hold while [Robin Camacho Group] focused on their other location in downtown Henderson,” a letter seeking an “extension of time” for the old approvals states. “As [Robin Camacho Group] were working on the other tavern and working on construction documents for this location, COVID reached the United States and Nevada in particular. As a result, all plans were put on hold due to the uncertainty of the hospitality business.”

To make up for lost time, the owners plan to scale back their plans for the site and “try to use the existing structures as much as possible to get up and running.” The City of Las Vegas last week approved the extension, giving Social Studies Gastropub until January 10, 2023, to make the project happen, “unless another Extension of Time is approved by the City of Las Vegas.”

The property’s former garage will be turned into the tavern area complete with a bar with gaming machines, and indoor dining, and the addition of roll-up doors to open out to the outside dining area. Two new toilets will be added to the west side of the building. The existing house, at 710 1st street, will be “removed” to make space for outdoor events and “potentially” a beer garden/dining area.
