American modern furniture and home furnishings retailer Room & Board is opening a “flagship” showroom in Old Pasadena.

It will replace the now-shuttered Z Gallerie, at 42 S De Lacey Ave.

Z Gallerie in mid-2019 filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and announced plans to close more than two dozen stores across the country including the one in Old Pasadena.

The new Room & Board is expected to open later this year having only recently executed its lease.

Brandon Cohan of CBRE and Pat Hurst of Hurst Harrigan co-represented the landlord in the deal.

Myron Sokolsky of NAI represented Room & Board.

“Room & Board brings an incredible amount of heritage in the furniture industry,” Cohan in an email Monday told What Now Los Angeles.

“Old Pasadena is ready for a completely new energy and modern taste of home essentials and furnishings. The city of Pasadena’s residential homes is almost all entirely designated Historic by the City. Therefore, not allowing for many modern residences and façade changes. However, such governing, in my opinion, keeps together such a charming beautiful community intact, as well as the culture.”

It will only be the sixth outpost in California for the Minnesota-based company, including one existing in Los Angeles.

Other local stores include Costa Mesa, San Diego, San Francisco, and a “pop-up” in Palm Springs.

“As many in the area know, the attractiveness of Pasadena residences are their rich and tasteful design collectives inside their sprawling estates” Cohan said.

“Pat Hurst and I are super proud to be a part of the next evolution of Old Pasadena’s retail scene.”
