Amazon’s Mysterious Grocery Store Concept Primed To Replace Portion of Kohl’s Just East of L.A.

Incoming La Verne location is one of several planned outposts of the e-commerce giant's new grocery concept across SoCal but is likely the most interesting in terms of real estate.

An Amazon grocery store is planned within Kohl’s, at 2229 Foothill Boulevard, Suite 200, in La Verne just east of Los Angeles. The proposed grocery store—which Amazon has yet to announce the name of even as its first-ever location prepares to open in Woodland Hills—would take 38,244 square feet of the existing 58,262-square-foot department store.

City leaders unanimously gave the green light to the project at the end of July despite previous objections by members of the public. The project was discussed at the City of La Verne Planning Commission earlier in the year after Amazon Retail, LLC submitted a request for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages out of the planned grocery store.

Amazon taking a chunk of the La Verne Kohl’s seems like a good extension of the recently-inked partnership between the companies. In early-2019, Kohl’s announced it would start accepting returns from Amazon customers across its more than 1,150 stores nationwide. And now, amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, Kohl’s has announced it plans on reducing the footprint of its existing stores. Amazon could follow the La Verne model with future locations, strengthening its connection to Kohl’s.

Among the incoming SoCal Amazon grocery stores are local outposts in North Hollywood and one is slated to debut shortly thereafter in Porter Ranch.
