Bearings Bike Shop is getting a brand new home in 2020.
Ground broke in early-December for the youth development organization’s planned digs across from Monday Night Garage near the mouth of the Atlanta BeltLine’s Westside Trail in Adair Park.
The first phase of the two-part project and a $2.25 million capital campaign ($2.34 raised) will move Bearings from the basement of 982 Murphy Avenue to the new, light-filled 5,000-square-foot program and classroom space.
Plans call for full demolition of one building, partial demolition of a second building, and demolition of existing sidewalk, concrete and pavement.
Exterior spaces will also be upgraded around the new bike shop.
Bearings worked with Square Feet Studio and Silverman Construction Program Management to develop the conceptual design.
Now, working with NELSON Worldwide and South-Tree Enterprises, the new repurposed layout for the property will “preserve the [historic] look and feel of the buildings, maintain the local character, improve the functionality of the site.”
“Starting with flat [tire] repair and working up, [southwest] Atlanta kids ages eight and up learn not only how to fix and maintain their own modes of transportation, but how to conduct themselves in a busy bike shop setting,” according to Bearings’ website.
“Community service, in the neighborhood and in the shop, is the ‘currency’ of the shop, allowing kids to earn supplies, parts, and accessories for their bikes.
The grand opening of this new facility has been slated for summer 2020.
