The Gwinnett, Newton, and Rockdale County Health Departments performed health inspections at several eateries on June 10. A Lawrenceville-based Mexican restaurant received a low score of 60 based on violations. Food inspectors asked it to take corrective action before its scheduled reinspection.

Patrons visit Polo’s Taqueria for authentic Mexican dishes. The June 10 inspection documented several violations at Polo’s Taqueria.

Food inspectors noted that the person in charge was not ensuring food code compliance at the Mexican eatery. An employee at Polo’s Taqueria was found not to wear gloves and prepare and serve tortillas with their bare hands. Inspectors then reported employees drinking in unapproved cups in the kitchen prep area.

The inspection report highlighted that raw beef was stored above cooked beef in the upright cooler. The on-site inspectors also observed raw beef above cooked rice and potatoes. The report noted that this condition may result in cross-contamination.

Food was stored above the required cold holding temperature of 41°F. In Polo’s Taqueria’s kitchen prep area, employees wore jewelry on their wrists and hands while cooking.

The on-site inspectors observed multiple clean dishes stacked wet at the Mexican restaurant. Polo’s Taqueria’s small prep cooler was not maintaining the ideal temperature below 41°F at its dessert bar.

Follow-up Inspection

The report for Polo’s Taqueria states that it will undergo a reinspection within the next 10 days. Failure to take corrective action could result in permit suspension. Two consecutive unsatisfactory scores could also result in permit suspension.

The GNR Health Departments carry out timely health inspections to scrutinize the food safety standards at food facilities. The restaurant did not meet health code requirements during the June 10 inspection.
