Zillow has ranked several U.S. cities considered as among the best markets for first-time home buyers. The list ranks Atlanta among the top five this year, noting several factors. Among these are the rent affordability and housing supply, which make it one of the easiest places to buy a first home.

Zillow Ranks Atlanta Among 2026 Top 5 Markets for First-Time Home Buyers

Navigating the housing market is never easy for first-time home buyers. To make buying houses easy, Zillow has analyzed the 50 largest U.S. metro areas and ranked the top 10. Among the cities ranked in the list, Atlanta performs well by being placed among the top 5.

Atlanta’s presence among the top cities in this list is due to different factors. These factors include the city’s growing job market and better housing availability. The study by Zillow aims to make buying a property less of a task for first-time home owners.

Criteria for the Ranking

Zillow places the cities in its list based on several factors. It looks into the current market behavior and how it will perform in the near future. The list aims to ensure that buyers are buying smart with less pressure.

The four main factors deciding the rankings in the list are as follows:

  • Rent Affordability: A lower rent makes it easier for buyers to save money faster for a down payment.
  • Home Affordability: This includes the number of homes that are available within a budget for a buyer.
  • Housing Supply (Inventory): The more homes there are, the more options the buyers get, which makes the process less stressful.
  • Buyer Competition: With fewer bidding wars, the chances of buyers actually getting a home increase.

What Places Atlanta Among the Top 5

Atlanta ranks fourth on Zillow’s list of the best markets for first-time home buyers in 2026. The city’s relatively affordable rent stands out. The city’s renters spend about 22% of their income on housing, making it easier to save for a down payment.

The city also has more homes within reach, with nearly 45% of listings being affordable for median-income buyers. It also has a good housing supply, giving buyers better chances with less pressure. Atlanta’s young buyer population (ages 29 to 43) accounts for about 37.4%, which is the prime homebuying age.

The average home value in Atlanta is around $380,000 according to Zillow. The study also shows that the prices are down by about 4%, giving buyers more room to negotiate.

Atlanta’s position on Zillow’s list highlights its accessibility in a challenging housing landscape. Its balance of affordability, availability, and lower competition offers first-time buyers a more realistic opportunity to home ownership in 2026.
