New Spelman College Residence Hall to Break Ground Next Spring

A prestigious educational institution in Atlanta has approved the construction of its new on-campus housing. After clearing a key financial hurdle, Spelman College has announced a major expansion plan.

The Develop Fulton Board of Directors has approved millions in tax-exempt bonds to support the project. Officials noted the project will not affect local property taxes.

Enhancing Campus Infrastructure

With $140 million in funding, Spelman College is soon to welcome the construction of a 230,000-square-foot residence hall. The space will include 670 beds, with modernized infrastructure that will enhance the students’ living experience.

The new cutting-edge technology infrastructure will upgrade the on-campus living experience. This includes smart building systems, better ventilation, air conditioning, and security, among others. Plans also call for landscaped green spaces designed to encourage community and connection among students.

Dawn Alston, CFO & senior vice president of Business and Financial Affairs at Spelman, said, “This transformative campus expansion is part of our broader commitment to elevate the student experience, modernize infrastructure, and strengthen Spelman’s national leadership in higher education. These upgrades to our campus living environment will allow us to better serve our students while honoring the institution’s legacy of academic excellence and innovation.”

The Project Timeline and Features

Set to break ground next spring, the project is expected to begin in May 2026 and finish in August 2028. The hall is expected to open ahead of the 2028 school year, after which two aging dorms will be demolished. The new housing will cover the lack of air conditioning and other facilities for students living on campus.

The development will make space for a larger student population to live on campus. College leaders said the project will also create jobs and generate economic activity in the surrounding area.

The project enhances the on-campus student living experience, promising them a comfortable environment. Once complete, the project will update campus housing and add a modern look to Spelman’s historic grounds.
