A shuttered Kroger in Decatur is going to be turned into a mixed-use development when the space is sold to new owners.
That’s the plan when Stein Investment Group – the current owner – sells the Kroger on Commerce Drive to Pope & Land, Decaturish.com reports.
Pope & Land is an Atlanta-based development company that owns the nearby office building after purchasing it in May 2021. According to the news outlet, the shuttered grocery store will be combined with the office space, transforming it into a 4.3-acre site that will include both retail and residential elements. A small grocery store could be part of the development.
City leaders identified the site as an opportunity for redevelopment this past summer, Atlanta Business Chronicle reports. The city’s master plan was updated for the first time in decades, envisioning mid-rise residential buildings, ground-level retail, and possibly a restaurant for the area.
The Kroger on Commerce Drive, often referred to as “Baby Kroger,” closed last year. The company cited declining sales and negative profit.
According to Decaturish.com, Stein Investment Group bought the Kroger in 2017 for $3.8 million.
It could be several years before the site is redeveloped. At the time of publication, the sale of the property hadn’t closed yet.
