The Old Fourth Ward building that used to be home to The Sound Table, and was to be home to Edgewood Dynasty starting Thursday, no longer has a western wall as its bricks crumbled to the ground Wednesday. It was expected that the wall would collapse after crews on Tuesday were excavating the adjacent lot in preparation for going vertical on a new midrise, and the brick building’s foundation and western wall started to crack.
Grant Henry, the owner of nearby Sister Louisa’s Church, arrived at the scene Wednesday moments after the wall came tumbling down. “I called 911 around 11:00 a.m. because it was apparent to me that [the wall] was shifting and would likely fall,” Henry told What Now Atlanta (WNA) in an interview. “The police told me they said they don’t save buildings, they save people, and since the building had been evacuated, there was nothing they could do.” The wall fell just before 2:30 p.m.
Edgewood Dynasty was less than two days away from replacing The Sound Table in the space when the building was evacuated yesterday. At the time of the evacuation, Co-Owner Greg Johnson told WNA he “lost everything” and was “devastated, but we will do everything we can to get through this very unfortunate situation.” Johnson did not immediately respond to WNA’s request for comment Wednesday.
The Old Fourth Ward Business Association on Thursday launched a GoFundMe seeking to raise $25,000 for Edgewood Dynasty. “Your donation will help them support their staff during this horrible time so that they can work on finding a new home in our community,” the crowdfunding page states.
Almost a year to the day, a similar situation unfolded at the Historic DuPre Excelsior Mill, also in Old Fourth Ward. That building did collapse as part of an effort by developers to preserve the nearly century-old building.
You might be missing a word and/or number.
Wow, that’s nuts. Wonder what could’ve caused that. Its honestly a wonder the upper floors are still there, as it looks like this wall was supporting them. If the building can be saved I’ll be amazed.
Corrected to “century-old.” Thanks for catching! ~ Caleb
Someone is going to get sued BIG TIME.
The best way to look at 2020 will be in the rearview mirror.
Buh bye…
Why would anyone call the police in that situation…
Police report for insurance purposes, enforce/assist with evacuation, close off nearby streets if there is concern for falling debris.
Yup, and 911 isn’t just the police.
Great drone footage!
They should have to rebuild the structure as it was instead of just demo it to make way for another cookie-cutter POS apartment/condo development.
you sound fun
