Pizza joint to take shuttered Virginia-Highland ice cream shop’s place.
Quick-service franchise Marco’s Pizza has plans to heat up space formerly belonging to Ben and Jerry’s in Virginia-Highland.
The once ice cream shop of 15 years, at 798 North Highland Avenue, has sat frozen in time since November 2011. The landlord, Jeff Stein of Stein Investment Group, Wednesday filed plans with City of Atlanta to buildout suite B for a Marco’s Pizza.
Stein and his team have been busy renovating the property after purchasing the building in 2013.
Neighboring space, suite A, what was once a 7,325-square-foot theatre, has not been leased, according to marketing materials for the property.
Marco’s Pizza recently opened stores in Sandy Springs and North Druid Hills.
That will be competition for Osteria just a block down. Too bad they could not come up with another ice cream concept or a bakery…
This is a tremendous disappointment. The neighborhood is so much stronger when we prop up small, local-owned business. Why on earth would we want a quick-svc pizza chain that makes horrible pizza? Meh.
How in the world does a Ben & Jerry’s go out of business?!? The shame!
I don’t know that B&J went out of business so much as decided the market and rent at that time was not right. There is NO doubt such an establishment would do phenomenally right now. Instead, we are getting a low brow pizza joint designed to cater to the drunks exiting all the bars there. Very unfortunate. The space is great for a bakery or ice cream shop as I mentioned above.
Will patrons and tables be in the common space (and rooftop patio) that B&J’s used to share with Starbucks? Or will they be taking over the whole front area including where SB used to be? I hope they’re able to keep the theater space intact. It’s pretty darn awesome!
Boooo… this is not the type of establishment that VaHi wants or needs. Average, boring chain pizza joint? What a waste of good space… Do these people not research the neighborhood?
