Big Citizen, the restaurant group behind The Lawrence, Bon Ton, and the soon-to-open Wonderkid, is in the throes of planning an artsy bar downtown.
The yet-to-be-named concept, at 81 Broad Street, was announced earlier this year as an art gallery and events space.
“It’s actually a bar and not a gallery,” Darren Carr, co-owner of Big Citizen, clarified in an email to What Now Atlanta Thursday.
Art will, however, play a key role at the forthcoming bar.
Jacob Anderson is overseeing the project’s “overall design” but “creations inside the space are all by local artists.”
At least 15 artists to be exact.
“The space is a powerful expression of creativity,” Carr said.
“Interesting and provoking installations to make you rethink your relationship with the bar.”
As an example, there will be a 30 foot mural of a greek orgy made of carpet designed by Rachael Schwarz.
“We want to give a platform to create and inspire everyone who walks through the door.”
The food and drinks follow the “same format” with creations like in-house canned cocktails.
“If you like weird, you’ll love this.”
There will also be live music “of every kind” including everything from touring bands to bedroom DJs and producers.
Carr and his team are aiming for a September or October 2019 opening “depending what this bitch of a building, I mean, beautiful historic building, deals us.”
