Gelato shop Cremalosa is on the move, according to a recent Instagram announcement from the brand. Chef and food writer Meredith Ford opened the shop in 2020 in Decatur. Now, it is moving to the Dale in Avondale Estates, where a retail development has been taking shape for a couple years at 64 N. Avondale Rd.
The Dale is expected to provide 25,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space in downtown Avondale. Developers broke ground on the project in December 2023, with plans to unveil the finished project in 2025.
Cremalosa’s last day of service at its Decatur location on June 21. It plans to open at the Dale in the fall.
“I want to thank everyone in the Decatur and Avondale communities for supporting me these last five years,” Ford wrote on the Cremalosa Instagram page. “This week has been like a homecoming for me and it fills my heart to see all of you! Please come see us in September at the Dale in Avondale! Thank you!”
Ford started her career as a pastry chef and jumped into food writing, before returning to her career as a chef. She created Cremalosa to be a community spot where people can hang out and enjoy gelato and wine. The website describes it as “a place where smiles are part of the décor, everyone is respected and treated fairly and lots of laughing takes place.”
Ford’s daughter Truett joined the team as head barista in 2023, introducing handcrafted espresso beverages to the menu.
The menu features rotating gelato options, including flavors like pistachio, caramel milano, banana pudding and peanut butter fudge. The shop rotates flavors weekly, offering about nine to 10 flavors at a time. Cremalosa also offers espresso, with some espresso-gelato combinations on the menu, as well as rotating pastries, wine and cocktails.
it’s going to be a hard Summer without Cremalosa but I’m glad they’re moving. as convenient as their location was for me on my walking path, whomever designed the 2 retail spots in the courtyard of that apartment building needs be expelled from building design. there’s very little foot traffic and the businesses can’t be seen from the street. out of sight, out of mind.
