New-to-market restaurant to open in 2017.

A new restaurant is entering the Atlanta barbecue scene.

Florida-based 4 Rivers Smokehouse plans to renovate a historic firehouse at 822 Marietta Street NW, according to the company’s website.

The eatery currently has 11 existing outposts with more locations planned or under construction.

After 20 years in the healthcare industry before retiring as president of a billion-dollar company, founder John Rivers followed his dream of traveling the United States with one purpose: “honing his taste and talent for brisket perfection.”

4 Rivers Smokehouse was born after the launch of “Barbecue Ministry” in 2004, when Rivers held a fundraiser for a local family whose child was battling cancer. The company website states that the ministry remains the center and focus of the enterprise.

The restaurant is slated to open in 2017.
