La Calavera Bakery Planning Kirkwood Location With a Small Retail Component

A daycare center will be converted into the bakery, according to plans filed with the City of Atlanta.

Decatur’s La Calavera Bakery—known for its mostly-organic whole grain bread, sourdoughs, and Mexican treats—is expanding to Kirkwood.

Co-owner Eric Arillo last week filed plans with the City of Atlanta to convert a daycare center, at 1696 Memorial Drive, into a new outpost of the bakery.

The 1,000-square-foot space would include a “small addition” to the rear of the building for a retail component.

Construction at the space would cost an estimated $120,000, according to the permit application.

Arillo and his wife Dale Ralston opened their Decatur bakery, at 747 E College Avenue C, in 2014 after launching a Kickstarter campaign.

It’s unclear if the planned location is in addition to the Decatur store or a relocation.

When reached by phone Tuesday, Arillo would not immediately comment on the project.
