UPDATE (February 13, 2019): Mary Hoopa’s in Hosea + 2nd Has Shuttered, Could Reopen Says Landlord

Chef Robert Phalen’s Mary Hoopa’s House of Fried Chicken & Oysters officially opened its doors February 5 in Atlanta’s East Lake neighborhood, according to a press release Monday.

As the name suggests, Mary Hoopa’s specializes in fried chicken and oysters, with the inspiration for the name coming from Phalen’s mother-in-law’s family friend and caretaker, Mary Hoopa, who championed literal yard-to-table cooking and Southern Louisiana flavors.

Her influence can be seen today in Chef Phalen’s fried chicken and some of the original hand-written recipes will be framed around the restaurant.

The menu features fried chicken (served house fried, hot or sweet), oysters, snacks and larger entrees complete with al carte sides.

Menu highlights include Shrimp Remoulade and Chef Phalen’s Chicken Sandwich.

Mary Hoopa’s beverage program is heavily beer-centric with a craft cocktail program.

Square Feet Studio designed Mary Hoopa’s to be a casual, neighborhood place where salvaged heart pine floors and plywood paneling mix with the patina of old plaster walls.

The 2,300 square-foot dining room seats 54 guests in an open floor plan with views of the kitchen, and a featured oyster bar is a focal point in the space.

A deck in the back seats 32.

Mary Hoopa’s, at 2371 Hosea L. Williams Dr. SE, Building 1, will be open seven days a week Sunday through Wednesday, 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday 4:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m.

The restaurant will also be open for late night operations Thursday through Saturday.
