The owners of Poor Hendrix are cooking up something new in Avondale Estates.

The Velvet Hippo, a new concept from Aaron and Jamie Russell, is being built out at 27 N Avondale Road.

It is expected to open in November, December at the latest, Aaron Russell told What Now Atlanta.

The Velvet Hippo Instagram page describes the concept as an “All-outdoor, counter-service Sandwich Shop offering good food, good drinks, & good vibes from day-time to dusk-time.”

Russell told What Now Atlanta that the small size of the building (about 400 square feet) lent itself well to a concise menu.

In addition to sandwiches, The Velvet Hippo will also serve cocktails.

Russell, a James Beard-nominated pastry chef, is no stranger to the Atlanta culinary scene, amassing experience at numerous acclaimed restaurants. The Russells’ other restaurant, Poor Hendrix, was recently included in Atlanta’s first-ever Michelin guide. Poor Hendrix is located in East Lake at 2371 Hosea L Williams Drive NE.

Wade Ross will be the kitchen manager at The Velvet Hippo. The restaurant is currently hiring kitchen staff.
