New life is planned for a former auto garage in Edgewood.

A pizzeria and neighborhood market are slated to go into the space on Whitefoord Avenue SE.

“It’s been a long time coming for us,” Sidney Weinstein told What Now Atlanta.

Weinstein, an attorney, has lived in the area for nearly two decades, allowing him to discover what residents would like to see in the neighborhood: The people want pizza.

“I’ve walked my dogs twice a day for 19 years, gotten to know people,” he said. “Kind of serendipitously, I’ve solicited responses. It’s kind of a hole in the market.”

The name of the restaurant is yet to be announced. It will feature mostly outdoor seating, serving pizza by the slice as well as whole pies for sit-down, delivery or pick-up. Salad, pasta dishes and grab-and-go items will also be available. Accompanying the eatery will be a market with food and beverage items. (Think more along the lines of a specialty grocery store than a convenience store.)

The space is next to the Mexican restaurant El Tesoro. With the advent of the Eastside Trolley Line Trail and the demolition of the building across the street from the future pizzeria, there’s a lot of potential activity in the area.

“It’s a relatively small corner, with several commercial buildings that can be turned into active operation… I’m anticipating once they get it all connected to the BeltLine, it will end up drawing more and more traffic,” Weinstein said.

Ultimately, he wants the pizzeria to be an accessible place people can walk or bike to, snagging a good meal for themselves or their family in a casual environment.

“People want a place they can just jump off the couch, doesn’t matter how they’re dressed or what they’re wearing, they can come down to the corner,” he said.

They hope to be open by early winter.
