‘Jimmy Jones Bourbon & Bar & Grill’ could take now-shuttered cafe and market’s place.
Virginia-Highland could soon be home to a new restaurant, “Jimmy Jones Bourbon & Bar & Grill.”
The eatery Wednesday filed a building permit application for commercial alterations to space formerly occupied by Belly General Store, at 772 N Highland Avenue NE.
The could-be Belly replacement would only make minor improvements to the space like changing the “seating and furniture,” and installing a “suppression hood” versus the existing “vent hood,” at a cost of $10,000, according to the application.
Belly covered its windows with brown paper early January and announced it had closed in a handwritten note on a piece of cardboard posted to Belly’s doors.
“Belly is moving,” according to the message. “Renovating inside, new business (food) coming soon.”
What Now Atlanta (WNA) is awaiting comment from Ideal Design Solutions (IDS), an engineering design, planning, construction, and consulting company, that was listed as the “applicant” in the filing.

We need breakfast! Can we get them to serve breakfast? Or like, what if they served bagels and coffee? 😉
I can’t imagine how they could get a liquor license given the lack of parking. This has been the downfall of many a would be club or bar in Virginia Highland. That location has zero parking spaces on it’s own property and would need to share the public places on the street. The only public lot (i.e. not reserved for the business on the property) in Lot 21 at the corner of Briarcliff place and N. Highland. It will be interesting to see how this develops. Personally I’d love to see another high end bar/restaurant in the neighborhood.
Any additional news on where Belly is being relocated to? I’m desperate for their bagels, and will be devastated if they don’t reopen somewhere else. I always thought that location was pretty high-brow for a little joint like that. This New Yorker wants his amazing bagels back!
Wilkl, since we already have a great breakfast place at American Roadhouse – ask the owner, Emil Blau, to add bagels to his menu (if he does not already have them).
1) A savvy market or something like that is really what the neighborhood needs; 2) I couldn’t think of a more unappealing name; 3) I miss having a convenient breakfast place; and 4) No offense to Will, the New Yorker, but olive oil bread with a hole in it does not a bagel make!
Do we really need another bar !
FYI; we serve wonderful coffee at Henry & June daily at 7am, and will be offering bagels starting this weekend!
Would love to see a nice bar come in, though. Would be a nice compliment to the block!
I miss Belly too! I don’t even really like bagels, but Belly was amazing. Please let us VaHi-landers know where it’s going!
Bring back Cyberstache!
FWIW, I was told that they were ID’ing 2-3 locations “not too far away…” But it did not seem set in stone by any means.
An unappealing name and an unappealing concept. That stretch of VaHi has enough low-brow drinking establishments. What it really needs is a BAKERY, a candy store, a wine bar, a cheese shop, etc. What I wouldn’t give to have a Highland Bakery settle in to that space.
Timone’s has bagels/breakfast now, and the restaurant’s whole theme is New York.
Timone’s bagels are actually really really good. Interested to see how this new Jimmy Jones place pans out…
