Kansas-based cupcake shop bakes its way to the big city.

Smallcakes, a cupcake only bakery, is opening in Buckhead.

The cupcake shop filed a permit with the city of Atlanta Wednesday to “alter” space at 2955 Peachtree Road near the Buckhead Atlanta development (formerly Streets of Buckhead).

Augusta-born Jeff Martin opened the first Smallcakes in Kansas City after leaving Atlanta to start a family.

“I’m super excited to come back home,” Martin told What Now Atlanta in a telephone interview Saturday. “Cupcakes are a big trend in bigger cities.”

The Buckhead location will be Smallcakes flagship, according to Martin. The cupcake shop has eight stores in all (five of which are franchised through Beautiful brands).

Of course, What Now Atlanta had to challenge Martin’s excitement by warning him that new cupcake shops were opening left and right in Atlanta.

“Several [cupcake] shops are opening but a lot are closing,” Martin said. “Sprinkles is our only competition.” Sprinkles is like the Starbucks of cupcakes, he said.

Contrary to the name, Smallcakes serves “jumbo-sized” cupcakes and was named after Martin’s three-year-old Lily, whose nickname from birth was “small cake.”

“We’ve gotten national attention,” Martin said. “Celebrities like Smallcakes.”

But will Atlanta?
