Taps will begin flowing in March at the German-Southern influenced establishment.
Georgia Beer Garden‘s long gestational period will soon be over, owners Johnny Martinez and Brandon Ley (of Joystick Gamebar) told What Now Atlanta (WNA) on Friday.
The new concept, across the street from Joystick at 420 Edgewood, has been in the works for a year and half now, inhibited by a cumbersome and “archaic” permitting process with City of Atlanta, according to Martinez.
The “quickly changing” brewing industry in Georgia is the inspiration behind the establishment, which will feature 24 beers on tap, exclusively from Georgia breweries including Orpheus, Sweetwater, and Creature Comforts. The duo’s wish is to showcase and give a platform to Georgia breweries and local talent. Edgewood’s lack of places to watch sports inspired Ley and Martinez to turn the third floor of the space into a sports bar.
Cuisine at Georgia Beer Garden will be Southern with a German twist.
The historic building dates to the early 1900s and was originally occupied by Tuno Packaging Company. In the 1920s, it became Edgewood Animal Hospital, the practice of Dr. Charles Rice, who was the veterinarian of the animals on the grounds of the Georgia state capitol as well as the horses of the Atlanta Police Department.
Ley and Martinez have also uncovered some interesting artifacts in remodeling the old building, among them several prohibition-era bottles, which they will use in decorating the space.
From the other business owners to residents of the neighborhood who have become regulars at Joystick, the diverse crowd of Edgewood is the owners’ favorite thing about the ‘hood: “We have only ever been encouraged.”
