Named Virginia Highland Books, a new indie bookstore will be opening in a growing northeast Atlanta neighborhood.
“I needed a new calendar and stopped in Paper Source when I saw the sign in the window of the Empire South space that it was going to be available,” Owner Sandy Huff said. “I drove home and just knew that spot should be a bookstore.”
Moving into space previously occupied by Empire South, Huff felt North Highland Avenue was the perfect place for a new bookstore.
“So many great things are happening on that corner right now, a coffee shop (PERC), a donut shop, Pizza By The Slice,” she explained. “So many people walk in the neighborhood and it felt like the right place for the community to gather, discover new books, and everyone can share their favorite reads.”
She wants the new store to feel like it belongs to the community.
“We’re hoping the shop will be filled with recommendations not only by the staff but that readers in the community have suggested,” she said.
The store will celebrate storytellers, good reads, book clubs, and more. It will host storytimes, author readings, and plans to include vinyl records, local art, and more.
“We want to carry all those things that we do and love,” she added. “Great cookbooks for cooking hiking books and travel books to (hopefully soon) plan your next getaway, and sharing new and old music with some great vinyl selections.”
Huff hopes to open at the end of May or at the beginning of June.
I just read about a bookstore wine bar mash-up opening in Stone Mountain Village– such a great concept!
Glad to see bookstores making a comeback– we just gotta make sure and support them.
Describing the middle of the highlands as “A growing northeast Atlanta neighborhood” hahahaha
Yeah, maybe in 1995…
The commercial district has been dying for many years now, but maybe it’s experiencing a rebirth.
I love WhatNowAtl. How does a reporter based in Denver get around and cover this stuff? You do a great job, just asking……
Love the article! Would you be able to share Ms. Huff’s email with me? I’m interested in applying for a job in that area, and a bookstore would be perfect.

Would you be able to share Sandra’s email address with me? I’d love to apply for a job.
