Luxury Buckhead mall submits plans for interior renovation.

Simon Property Group is moving forward with plans to overhaul the interior of Phipps Plaza, the developer’s luxury Buckhead mall.

A building permit application was submitted to City of Atlanta Wednesday for commercial alterations to the mall’s “common areas.”

This project will be the 45-year-old mall’s first major renovation since 1992.

An estimated $2,609,000 will be spent on things like replacing handrails, painting the mall’s interior, and new flooring throughout, according to the application.

After completion of the mall’s renovation, Simon could develop a mixed-use project with retail, residences (Domain at Phipps) and a Marriott-branded hotel, all located on the same parcel of land as the luxury mall.

This project follows a multi-phase renovation of Phipps’ sister property across the street, Lenox Square, completed mid-July.

We may see this get torn down some day and replaced with more office towers.
