Mexican Sugar will open a new spot at The Domain in Austin, Texas, on March 24. The restaurant will offer scratch-made Latin cuisine, handcrafted cocktails, and an extensive selection of tequilas and mezcals in an immersive setting.
Mexican Sugar Blends Tradition and Innovation in Latin Cuisine
Known for a chef-driven menu and an agave program, Mexican Sugar will allow guests to indulge in mezcal, sotol, and tequila. Located at 11506 Century Oaks Terrace in North Austin, the design of the eatery is curated to reflect its tradition.
“Austin has one of the most exciting dining scenes in Texas,” said Christine Magrann, President and COO of Mexican Sugar.
“When guests walk into Mexican Sugar at The Domain, the design begins telling the story immediately. The artwork has a Frida Kahlo spirit that brings a sultry energy to the space, and the patio extends that feeling outdoors as a place where the neighborhood can gather.”
Dining with Cultural Storytelling

The menu focuses on traditional techniques and fresh ingredients, which will include hand-pressed tortillas made using heirloom masa. With a wide array of dishes, some of the signature ones include Angus Skirt Steak, Barbacoa Tacos, and Chicken Mole, with other large plates.
The weekend brunch offers Benedictos Rancheros, Vanilla Cinnamon Pancakes, Breakfast Americano, and Cajeta French Toast. The food is paired with Cava mimosas, Bloody Marias, and margaritas.
Local Artists and Open-Air Design

Mexican Sugar is designed to reflect cultural storytelling. The entrance features an authentic Mexican clay tile that leads into a space drawn from modern hacienda architecture. With layered textiles, wood beams, and leather seating, the setting leans towards Latin design traditions.
Guests can also enjoy a front row seat to the chefs preparing the dishes. Custom lighting installations by metal artist Rae Ripple, featured on Netflix’s Metal Shop Masters, light up major areas throughout the restaurant. Austin-based muralist Ruben Esquivel of East End Eclectic painted a large-scale mural.
It was inspired by clay textures and Latin patterns and had three birds that represent Mexican Sugar’s past, present, and future. Meanwhile, the bar remains at the center of the eatery and is connected to the patio, a gathering place for guests. Spanning 1,770 square feet, the patio includes garage-style doors and offers an indoor-outdoor setting for up to 330 guests.
The custom shelving highlights the restaurant’s agave collection. Mexican Sugar covers about 11,000 square feet, and a private dining area can host up to 60 guests.
