Tucked into the vibrant energy of downtown Austin, Tómalo Grill is carving out its place as more than just a restaurant. It’s a gathering place. Located at 44 East Avenue #100, the Latin-inspired concept blends bold coastal flavors, crafted cocktails, and laid-back sophistication in a space designed for connection.

The restaurant is the latest hospitality venture from Urbanspace, the Austin-based development firm known for blending luxury design with local energy. At the helm is CEO Kevin Burns, who oversees Urbanspace Hospitality’s creative, developmental, and operational vision. Last month, Tómalo and What Now Media Group hosted an Accelerate event, and since then, What Now connected with Burns to learn more about the inspiration behind the concept and what makes the journey worthwhile.

“The best part about being in the hospitality industry, especially when you own a restaurant or bar, is the ability to create a space where people feel welcome, connected, and taken care of,” Burns tells What Now Media Group in an exclusive interview. “There’s something powerful about watching guests enjoy a meal, celebrate an occasion, or simply relax at the end of a long day, knowing you helped make that moment possible.”

Tómalo was born out of a love for Latin flavors, fresh coastal ingredients, and what Burns calls “vibrant hospitality.” The name itself is a playful invitation — “take it” — to grab a drink, try something new, and settle in for an experience that feels both fun and elevated.

“The goal was to create a space where you could have thoughtful cocktails, fresh approachable food, and warm service, all under one roof,” he says. “It’s a nod to the flavors that inspire us, with a playful edge.”

Choosing the 44 East location was no accident. For Burns and his team, downtown Austin represented both an exciting challenge and a natural home.

“The location felt like the right fit, tucked within the heart of Austin’s vibrant downtown energy but still grounded enough to feel like a neighborhood spot,” Burns explains. “The idea was to be accessible to both locals and visitors who appreciate bold flavors in a stunning, laid-back setting.”

Since opening, the team has experienced both momentum and growing pains, but the overall reception has been energizing.

“Like any new restaurant, there have been highs and challenges,” Burns says. “But the response from the community has been positive overall. Every week, we see new faces and returning guests, which has been both humbling and energizing. We’re just getting started.”

Of course, launching a restaurant, especially one with creative ambition, comes with its hurdles.

“Balancing vision with logistics. There’s the dream version of what you want your concept to be, and then there’s the reality of city codes, build-outs, staffing, and day-to-day operations,” he says. “Staying flexible without compromising on your core vision is the real challenge.”

But the reward, he says, is worth every late night and learning curve.

“Watching guests connect with the experience you’ve created, whether that’s a perfect cocktail, a shared meal, or just a great night out. Seeing the space take on a life of its own is incredibly rewarding.”

As Tómalo continues to evolve, the team is leaning into new activations, including a recently reopened Taqueria window and the upcoming Agave Lounge. This late-night extension adds even more dimension to the experience. And there’s more on the horizon. Urbanspace plans to open The Modern Bar in late 2025, located within The Modern Residences.

“There’s always something brewing. Right now, the focus is on refining and evolving Tómalo,” Burns says. “We’re constantly pushing ourselves.”

Whether it’s for an after-work cocktail or a long, lively dinner, Tómalo Grill invites guests to come as they are.

“We’re here to serve, surprise, and satisfy. Hospitality is at the core of everything we do.”
