Zalat, a growing Texas-based pizza chain, will soon be opening in the West Campus neighborhood of Austin, according to a recent filing with the State of Texas. The restaurant will be located at 2222 Rio Grande, within The Quarters building complex.
The West Campus neighborhood is a significant location considering its dense student population and the pedestrian infrastructure that often makes restaurants located in the neighborhood highly successful. The lasting popularity of neighboring eateries such as Pluckers and Cain & Abel’s testify to the area’s value.
According to the filing, the restaurant will “remodel existing restaurant,” meaning that one of the current restaurants in the building will be replaced by Zalat. The filing estimates a start to the construction at the end of February and a prospective conclusion at the very end of 2023, so readers and partners can safely assume a late Q4 opening or even an early 2024 opening. The filing also estimates a $120,000 construction cost.
Zalat offers a simple menu of different Chef-made pizzas. The company’s website recommends three above all—The Zealot (“all-beef pepperoni, sausage, salami, red onions, black olives, mushrooms, red bell peppers, and chives”), The Pepperoni Masterclass (“A mountain of 100% all-beef pepperoni, oregano, black pepper, and crushed garlic. This is greasy, savory, New York pizza perfection.”), and The Sweet Revenge (“Bacon onion jam with infinity swirls of house-made hot honey, mozzarella, salami, crushed red pepper, fresh basil, and a little extra basil on the side. This is likely the best pizza you have ever had in your life.”)
What Now Austin reached out to Dennis Minchella, COO of Zalat, to inquire further information about the restaurant, but he was not immediately available for comment.
