Clover Fast Food, Inc. filed a WARN notice on March 30, notifying state officials of layoffs. The company said it is seeking a buyer for its restaurants and filed the WARN notice to meet Massachusetts legal requirements in case a deal is not finalized.

WARN Notice Filed

Clover has stated it could lay off 182 employees, filing a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice on March 30. The job cuts will affect workers at its facility on Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge and are scheduled for May 29, 2026.

Clover Fast Food, Inc. shared a statement with WhatNow stating it is currently seeking a buyer for its restaurants and filed the WARN notice to comply with Massachusetts regulations if a deal is not finalized. “We are optimistic that Clover will continue to serve our locally sourced farm-to-table fast food in our company’s next chapter,” the company added.

Enacted in 1988, the WARN notice is a federal law. It provides an advance notice to state officials and employees about the upcoming job cuts.

The law requires employers with over 100 employees to provide a 60-day notice prior to mass layoffs and plant closures.

About the Company

Clover, the Boston-based vegetarian restaurant chain, was founded in 2008. The company is headquartered in Massachusetts and started its journey as a single food truck near MIT. With years of dedication and great meals, Clover expanded its footprint in the state and grew into a recognized regional brand.

The company serves fully organic and plant-based meals prepared with fresh and organic ingredients. Currently, Clover operates multiple locations across the Boston area and offers a rotating menu featuring seasonal favorites.

Apart from restaurants and meal trucks, the chain also offers Home Meal Boxes. These boxes include fresh, locally sourced ingredients, along with dips and sauces for an easy and quick meal at home.

Clover Rebuilds After Bankruptcy

The company filed for bankruptcy in late 2023 after facing operational and financial pressure. It later emerged from Subchapter V of Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2024, following the closure of several underperforming locations and the renegotiation of leases.

According to a report by WhatNow, in 2024, the company announced plans to open 47 new outlets within the next five years. The expansion of the chain would be initially focused on the Greater Boston area and then move towards New England.

“Having filed for bankruptcy last November, Clover Food Lab has utilized this period for restructuring. As part of the process, they’ve closed two branches located in Boston’s Copley Square and Somerville’s Assembly Row, along with a Dedham warehouse,” the report stated.

Considering its transitions over the past two years, the latest layoffs suggest that the company is still in the process of stabilizing its business. The upcoming layoffs of 182 employees will impact Clover’s workforce and local community as well.
