A beloved Boston sub shop is growing its footprint in the city.

Al’s Café will soon open two new locations at 27 School Street in Downtown Crossing and 184 High Street in the Financial District, confirmed partner Sergio Mehilli.

The Downtown Crossing café is slated to launch in October, with the Financial District spot opening slightly earlier. The new cafés will join Al’s existing outposts on State and Essex streets in the downtown area, plus sites in the Seaport District and Cambridge’s Kendall Square.

City licensing records show that the School Street café will span roughly 1,420 square feet, with table seating for eight and a takeout counter. The High Street spot will be a bit larger at 1,506 square feet and will include a bar area with stool seating, as well as a takeout counter.

Alan ‘Al’ Costello founded the original State Street café in 2002, quickly earning acclaim for his fresh, made-to-order hot and cold gourmet subs. Fan favorites include the Steak and Cheese, Chicken Pesto, and Honey Ham, and the menu also features wraps, salads, and soups, plus catering services for large gatherings.

Mehilli said that the new locations will offer a similar menu “at great prices with fast service,” along with some exciting new additions—including expanded salad and appetizer offerings—which are currently in development.

Consistent with the other locations, Al’s High Street Café will operate until 3 p.m., while Al’s School Street Café will stay open until 9 p.m., perfect for Downtown Crossing’s bustling evening crowd.

“We’re thrilled to bring Al’s Café to this vibrant part of the city and look forward to serving both new and familiar faces,” said Mehilli.
