A small group of award-winning ice cream shops is expanding its footprint in the Boston area.
Holy Cow Ice Cream Cafe is gearing up to open its fifth location at 19 3rd Ave in Burlington, nestled in a retail center alongside several other eateries. This new addition will join the brand’s existing locations in Gloucester, Salem, Peabody, and Dennis.
Owner Mike Schifino confirmed this news with What Now Boston, emphasizing Holy Cow’s roots as a family-run venture. “Despite people sometimes labeling us as a ‘chain’ we’re still very much a small family-owned business,” he said.
The Burlington cafe will serve the same ice cream offerings as the other locations, including classic and creative flavors like Salted Caramel Brownie, Vanilla, Candy Cane Crush, and Vegan Peppermint Oreo. Beyond its signature scoops, Holy Cow serves ice cream sandwiches, homemade cookies, bark, and pup cups—a coconut-based peanut butter ice cream treat for dogs.
Holy Cow’s accolades are as impressive as its menu. Most recently, it won the Northeast Regional Flavor of the Year at the country’s largest ice cream competition and earned the prestigious “Grand Master Ice Cream Maker” title, an honor granted to only a select few.
In 2022, the cafe earned first Place for National Flavor of the Year from the North American Ice Cream Association for its Ritzy AF flavor, a decadent blend of salted butter cracker ice cream and house-made Ritz Cracker Toffee Bark.
Schifino plans to open the Burlington location in the spring of next year, aiming for a May 2025 debut.
