A South End favorite is slowly stirring back to life.

Banyan Bar + Refuge, the popular Asian gastropub at 553 Tremont St, has been closed since a fire broke out at the building on June 30, 2025. At the time, management was hopeful that the restaurant could reopen later that week, but the blaze proved far more devastating than they had initially anticipated.

Since the closure, the team has been navigating extensive repairs and the maze of permits required to restore the space. Adding to the setbacks, a burglary at the end of July resulted in the loss of electronics and other essential equipment.

Founded in 2015, Banyan is part of The Gallows Group, the hospitality company of local restaurateur Rebecca Roth Gullo, who is rumored to be reviving her trendy gastropub in 2026.

Gullo told What Now Boston that a reopening timeline for Banyan has not yet been set. Insurance is expected to “eventually” cover the losses, but the best way the community can help right now is by supporting Banyan’s sister restaurants, Blackbird Doughnuts and Sally’s Sandwiches.

Beyond Banyon, Gullo highlighted the broader importance of small businesses in the South End, especially as those near the Mass. and Cass intersection contend with rising rents, frequent break-ins, drug activity, and other disruptions. She stressed how vital these establishments are in maintaining the neighborhood’s character and vitality.

Despite the hurdles, the Banyan team remains upbeat, regularly updating fans with social media posts and playful skits. In the latest update on September 3, 2025, Gullo shared that the restaurant has received approval to repair one section of the kitchen hood.

“So, we are waiting,” said Gullo. “No clear opening date and no day when we know that the construction is gonna happen. But we will reopen. We will keep you guys in the loop. We appreciate all of your support. Thanks for going to Blackbird and Sally’s. Banyan loves you.”

Known for its inventive Asian plates served amid treelike sculptures, Banyan has long been celebrated for its signature dollar dumplings—ten dumplings for $5, served daily from 4 to 6 p.m.
