A seafood-centric Chinese restaurant in downtown Boston is expanding to Brookline.

Chinatown’s Jumbo Seafood is moving into the former site of Xiang’s Hunan Kitchen at 1032 Commonwealth Ave near Boston University and the Boston Line, reports Boston Restaurant Talk.

The restaurant originally debuted in Chinatown more than 15 years ago and was later rebranded as New Jumbo Seafood under new ownership. A second location closed in Newton Centre in 2022 when the original owners turned their focus back to the Chinatown spot.

Known for its Hong Kong-style menu, Jumbo Seafood mixes familiar favorites with more adventurous options. Standout dishes include the Pork & Shrimp Dumplings, Salted Egg Yolk Lava Buns, Brisket Noodle Soup, Sweet & Sour Riblets, and Stir-Fried Clams. The Brookline outpost will also serve alcohol, taking over Xiang’s approved license.

Business filings indicate that the new eatery will be operated by original owners Catherence Chan and Kenneth Leung. Although the duo could not be reached for comment, a Brookline Select Board Licensing Hearing indicates that the restaurant will operate daily from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., with seating for 44 guests.

An official opening date has not yet been announced, so keep an eye out for updates as Jumbo Seafood sets up shop in Brookline.
