A Master Sommelier is behind plans for an innovative new project in South Boston.
Brahm Callahan, a local industry veteran with more than 20 years in the restaurant world, is hoping to open a new fine-dining establishment in the former 7,287-square-foot Coppersmith space at 40 West Third Street, reports Caught in Southie.
Callahan confirmed this news with What Now Boston, noting that, while plans are still in the early stages, he’s “trying to” bring the concept to life. He declined to share additional details at this time.
What we do know, however, paints an ambitious portrait. The venue—whose name has not yet been disclosed—would feature a coursed fine-dining experience, a wine bar, a speakeasy, a 50-seat patio, and an Eataly-inspired package store selling wine to go, according to details shared at a July 10 abutter’s meeting.
At the meeting, Callahan explained that his team has applied for a new common victualler all-alcohol license with a 2 a.m. closing time—primarily to allow flexibility for private events that would otherwise require single-use licenses. If needed, he said they’re prepared to purchase a license on the private market, a process that could cost as much as $600,000.
Some members expressed concerns about the late-night hours, but Callahan emphasized that the restaurant would not explicitly function as a bar and would instead operate in line with its fine-dining focus.
Parking, too, is being taken seriously. Plans call for a 40-car lot off West Second and Bolton Streets, and valet service would extend to the nearby State Street Garage if needed. Callahan also intends to assign the restaurant’s geotag to the lot to ensure Uber and Lyft drop-offs don’t clog surrounding streets.
Callahan boasts an impressive background to support his ambitious plans. He’s worked at a number of acclaimed restaurants across the Boston area, including Grill 23 & Bar, Harvest, and Bistro du Midi, and he became a Master Sommelier in 2015. In 2018, he co-founded Faucet Wine, a venture capital fund dedicated to growing wine-centric businesses.
There’s no set date for when the project will be reviewed by the Licensing Board, but if all goes smoothly, Callahan is aiming for a late summer 2026 opening. Stay tuned for updates as this wine-forward dining spot begins to take shape in Southie.
