A modern Japanese teahouse is making its Massachusetts debut.
Nana’s Green Tea, a Tokyo-based café known for its matcha-forward menu and contemporary design, is opening its first location in the state at 175 Newbury St in Boston’s Back Bay. Set to occupy a 1,022-square-foot garden-level space, the upcoming shop will offer both indoor and outdoor seating for up to 21 guests.
The Back Bay teahouse is being brought to life by Covent Restaurant Group, a local hospitality team known for imaginative, Asian-inspired concepts. Their portfolio includes Yunnan Kitchen, Boston’s first restaurant dedicated to Yunnan cuisine, and Machi Machi, a trendy Taiwanese bubble tea shop.
“Nana’s Green Tea is a modern Japanese teahouse, serving desserts in an imaginatively designed setting,” Covent founder and CEO Patrick Siu told What Now Boston. “We decided to bring this concept to Boston because of the deep-rooted Japanese culture that has been around in Boston for decades.”
Founded in 2001, Nana’s Green Tea today operates more than 90 shops worldwide, the majority of which are in Japan. The menu features an array of green tea-infused treats, from matcha frappes and soft serve to pastries and parfaits.
Siu said the Boston location will reflect the offerings of Nana’s New York City shop, with matcha sourced directly from the brand’s dedicated tea farm in Uji, Kyoto—a region known for producing Japan’s finest green tea.
He added that the Boston outpost will emphasize omotenashi (おもてなし), the Japanese philosophy of heartfelt hospitality rooted in anticipating guests’ needs with genuine thoughtfulness and grace.
Once it debuts in late fall 2025, Nana’s Green Tea will offer dine-in and takeout daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
