New England’s oldest retail bakery is preparing for a move just up the block.
Lyndell’s Bakery will relocate from 720 Broadway in Somerville to a new space at 734 Broadway in early to mid-2026. Owner Bill Galatis told What Now Boston that the bakery’s current building is slated for demolition, clearing the way for a four-story apartment complex.
“The owner of the building has been permitted to put up a 28-unit apartment building, so we have to move,” Galatis said. “It’s certainly stressful, but we’ve been working collaboratively, both the landlord and myself.”
The plan is to keep Lyndell’s open through Easter weekend (April 5, 2026) before closing briefly to move equipment and set up the new storefront, aiming to reopen in late April or early May. “The idea is to move the equipment within a two-week period into the new space, which will be completely renovated at that point,” Galatis explained.
The new location will undergo a full remodel. It’s currently occupied by Tufts Market, which is expected to vacate in January. Once the space is cleared, Lyndell’s will begin demolition and buildout, and new ovens will be installed.
Founded in 1887 by Swedish immigrant Birger C. Lindahl and purchased by Galatis in 2000, Lyndell’s is beloved for its scratch-made breads, pastries, pies, cupcakes, custom cakes, and iconic half-moon cookies. All the classics will remain on the menu, but the move will also bring some exciting updates.
Galatis plans to expand the bakery’s beverage program, grow its fresh-bread offerings, and introduce a few fresh pastries. While the new space is about the same size, guests can expect a dedicated display-case room, a half-glass partition offering a view into the production area, and possibly limited seating if the layout allows.
An official opening date for the new Lyndell’s Bakery hasn’t been set. For the latest updates, follow @lyndellsbakery on social media.
