A Mexican restaurant in Milford is expanding to Waltham with a more casual twist.

Monarca Taqueria is opening a second location at 663 Main Street in the downtown area, reports Boston Restaurant Talk. This long-vacant space was most recently home to Gustazo Cuban Kitchen & Bar, which moved to Moody Street in 2019.

According to a Facebook post from The Waltham Channel, owners Ramiro and Raquel Marin recently appeared before the city’s license commission to request the transfer of a seven-day all-alcohol license for their upcoming venture. The license was previously held by Revelry, a Cajun food truck concept that announced plans to open in the space just before the pandemic derailed them.

The new eatery is expected to feature many of the same hits from the Milford menu, served in a quicker, more casual format. Fan favorites include the carnitas quesadilla, chile verde burrito, steak tacos, and birria bowl.

“This is more like fast food, not a full restaurant,” Ramiro explained during the license commission meeting.

The Marins, who lived in Waltham for 25 years before launching Monarca in Milford’s Nathaniel Plaza in 2022, told What Now Boston they don’t yet have an estimated opening timeframe. “It’s been a long process to get things going but we’ll be sure to announce any updates we have,” they said.
