The owner of a natural wine shop in Boston’s South End has plans to open a new wine bar and restaurant just a few blocks away.

Spenser Payne of Neighborhood Wines on Tremont Street has applied for an alcohol license for his proposed 1,440-square-foot establishment, tenatively called Mondo, at 563 Columbus Avenue, reports Boston Restaurant Talk.

Payne briefly confirmed the news with What Now Boston, noting that he still has “a few hearings to get through before we are officially official” and that more details will follow once those are complete.

While the specific food offerings are unknown, an abutters meeting notice from May reveals that Mondo would also operate as a restaurant. As for the alcohol, it’s a safe bet that the focus would be on the rare natural wines that Neighborhood Wines has championed since its spring 2023 debut.

According to a licensing committee notice, the proposed space includes a main dining area, bar seating, and a 240-square-foot seasonal patio (open March through October) with room for 12 guests.

Operating hours are set for 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and again from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., with earlier closings expected Sunday through Wednesday.

In a July 23 Instagram story, Neighborhood Wines shared a call to action: “Friends, neighbors. We are opening a wine bar. (Trying to!) We need letters of support to get this through!”

Supporters are encouraged to email [email protected] with their name, address, and a letter in favor of Mondo.
