A short-lived rooftop bar and restaurant in South Boston has shut down, though a comeback could be on the horizon.

The Essex and its rooftop lounge, both inside the Cambria Hotel at 6 W Broadway, announced their sudden closure on Instagram this week.

“Unfortunately we have been unable to obtain an entertainment license from the City due to ongoing opposition from neighbors,” the post reads. “Therefore we have decided to close all operations at The Cambria Hotel for the foreseeable future.”

The Essex debuted in March with a menu of steak, pasta, and other seasonally-inspired dishes, followed later by the rooftop bar featuring bar bites and cocktails. The project was led by restaurateur Kristin Jenkins, also behind 1928 Beacon Hill and a potential Rowes Wharf concept.

Boston.com reports that pushback began almost immediately. At an April abutter’s meeting, neighbors objected to noise from music and events, leading to hundreds of signatures in opposition.

Residents argued that the neighborhood was not suited to Seaport-style nightlife, and ultimately, the venue was forced to close. For now, the future of The Essex remains uncertain.
