A cult-favorite ice cream brand known for its wildly creative flavors is headed to Boston.

Portland, Oregon-based Salt & Straw will open its first Massachusetts location at 200 Seaport Blvd in the Seaport District, according to a recent MassLive report. The new scoop shop marks the company’s official entrance into the state, with its closest existing outpost currently located in Salem, New Hampshire.

Founded in 2011 by cousins Kim Malek and Tyler Malek, the company began humbly, with Tyler experimenting with flavors in Kim’s basement while Kim invested her savings into an ice cream cart to introduce their product to the public. What started as a small, scrappy operation has since grown into more than 50 scoop shops nationwide.

Today, Salt & Straw is celebrated for its chef-driven, small-batch ice creams made with thoughtfully sourced, farm-forward ingredients. The menu rotates monthly, spotlighting both nostalgic comforts and boundary-pushing creations. Popular flavors include Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, Honey Lavender, Snap N’ Crackle Marshmallow Treats, and The Salty Donut Guava & Cheese. Vegan and gluten-free options are also available.

“At Salt & Straw, anything is possible,” reads the company’s website. “Crafted with unthinkable care, our team cooks, freezes, candies, smashes, drizzles, ribbons, spoons, and sprinkles, creating flavor profiles that awaken taste buds. Using ice cream as a blank slate for storytelling, we fearlessly explore ingredients, discover emerging artisans, and share inspiring, unifying experiences.”

And the Seaport shop will offer more than just cones and cups. Guests can look forward to hand-packed pints, ice cream cakes, and the brand’s viral “Tacolate”—an ice cream taco featuring a waffle cone shell dipped and filled with various flavors and toppings.

The new location also plans to host community-centered events that celebrate the city’s culture while bringing neighbors together over a scoop (or two). An official opening date is expected to be announced in the coming months. Be sure to follow the scoop shop on social media @saltandstraw for the latest.

“We’re so excited to open in a city that is already home to true ice cream lovers and champions of local food culture,” Kim said in a press release. “We’ve always known Boston would be a major market for us, and we can’t wait to partner with local artisans in the city.”
