Sudbury‘s only drive-thru café will soon be revitalized.
Debby’s Drive Thru Coffee, located at 425 Boston Post Rd in Sudbury Crossing, was expected to close for good last month. Instead, the café will reopen under the leadership of 26-year-old Lincoln-Sudbury graduate Kerani Verma, though details are still being finalized.
Founder Debby Johnston, who launched the Fotomat-turned-drive-thru kiosk in 2013, had originally planned to shut down after the town’s public health director, Vivian Zeng, raised concerns over the café’s use of microwaved raw eggs in its breakfast sandwiches. But Debby says she and Vivian are now working together on new preparation techniques.
That collaboration cleared the way for Kerani to step in as Debby’s successor. “[Kerani] grew up coming to my shop and dreamed of someday owning a business like mine. So we are making it happen,” Debby wrote in a Facebook update, adding that she’ll stick around to mentor Kerani and continue greeting customers.
Kerani confirmed the plans with What Now Boston but noted that the café’s name and rebranding details are still being finalized. A Google Business page for the address lists Ruby&Gray’s—Kerani’s online baking business—as the new name, suggesting that additional sweet treats could be added to Debby’s familiar lineup of coffee, tea, baked goods, sandwiches, and hot dogs.
Debby explained that the team still needs time to finalize new egg preparation methods and get Kerani’s licenses in order before reopening. “Sudbury’s only drive-thru is poised to reopen better than ever and to continue for a long time to come,” she said.
Kerani said she’d share more details as soon as the team has finalized the café’s name and reopening timeline, so stay tuned for updates.
