A popular New York-based halal franchise is cooking up something new in downtown Boston.
The Halal Guys will soon open its sixth Greater Boston location at 241 Washington St, announced the brand on Instagram last month.
“Big news, Boston! 🎉 The Halal Guys is coming soon to Downtown! Get ready for your favorite platters, sauces, and street food flavor like no other,” the team wrote. “Stay tuned—Downtown Boston is about to get way more delicious! 👀🔥”
The franchise was founded back in 1990, when Egyptian entrepreneurs Abdelbaset Elsayed, Mohamed Abouelenein, and Ahmed Elsaka started a hot dog cart in New York City. Noticing a demand for halal meals among Muslim taxi drivers, the trio eventually pivoted to serving platters of chicken, gyro, and rice.
Since then, The Halal Guys has grown into an international sensation, boasting more than 100 outposts across the U.S., U.K., Canada, Indonesia, and South Korea. Existing Boston-area locations can be found in downtown Boston, Dorchester, the Fenway, the Theatre District, Cambridge, and Shrewsbury, with another on the way to Dedham.
Behind the upcoming eatery is BGR Hospitality. President Jamal Bourote teamed up with Halal Guys franchisee Imran Asghar to develop 10 Dave’s Hot Chicken locations in 2021, and the group also operates several local Blaze Pizza branches.
A licensing board hearing page reveals that the new 1,145-square-foot spot will operate from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m., featuring a takeout counter along with seating for up to 15 guests.
A representative for The Halal Guys confirmed the downtown expansion with What Now Boston but couldn’t dish out an exact opening date just yet. Follow the eatery’s Facebook page for updates.
