A brand new yet-to-be-named concept from restaurateur Birdie Yang is getting ready to debut in Myers Park, located at 2907 Selwyn Ave.
Yang and his business partner, Janine Lu, have opened two Yama Asian Fusion sites throughout Charlotte, with another on the way to LoSo this fall. Now, the two are getting ready to open a new tasting menu concept across the street from The Jimmy, featuring a combination of French and Japanese dishes with a dedicated focus on fine wines, according to Unpretentious Palate. The restaurant is expected to open by year-end.
“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” Yang tells Unpretentious Palate. “It’s a dinner-only place in a very intimate setting. We’ve been doing a lot of market research, we’ve been doing a lot of tasting dinners to test the concept.”
Unlike Yang’s other restaurants, including his first, Baku, this new concept will be much smaller, with about 30 seats for customers, including a chef’s table and additional seats in the dining area. Initially, Yang considered doing a purely Japanese omakase concept but decided on a new approach.
“I always wanted to build that (omakase) restaurant, but Robin (Robin Anthony, chef-owner of Prime Fish and Omakase by Prime Fish, who worked for Yang previously) did that; since one of my students had already done it, I don’t need to do it anymore,” Yang says. “We don’t have to kill each other. We can complement each other. So I’m doing something completely off-beat.”
