A soul food restaurant is heading to The Tavern at Old Salem space. Bread of Heaven is bringing soul food to 736 S Main St. in Winston-Salem.
Mark Spell has been operating Bread of Heaven inside Shekinah Glory Church, where he also serves as a pastor. Now, Bread of Heaven will be opening in the historical building at Old Salem this fall.
Menu items for Bread of Heaven include turkey wings, oxtails smothered in gravy, meatloaf, fried catfish, baked chicken, ribs, BBQ plates, and sides like mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and candied yams.
“At Bread of Heaven, we believe that food is not just about sustenance but a reflection of culture and heritage. Our culinary team puts their heart and soul into every dish they create, ensuring that each bite is a taste of nostalgia and warmth. From crispy fried chicken to buttery cornbread, each item on our menu is a labor of love that brings joy to the soul,” the website states.
What Now Charlotte reported last fall that the building that housed The Tavern at Old Salem was set to undergo renovations, with plans to revitalize the space. The restaurant has been closed since 2019. The spot was formerly known for a menu that offered nods to Moravian traditions and history. The Go-To Winston-Salem reports that the new Bread of Heaven spot will bring some traditions from The Tavern menu into the new concept, such as Moravian Chicken Pie.
An exact opening date remains unknown at this time.
