Whataburger has plans to open a spot at 604 River Highway in Mooresville later this year, according to a release on the Whataburger website. It will open on the tail end of a major rollout of North Carolina locations slated for the brand for this year.

The burger brand is about to open the first North Carolina location in Gastonia on May 29. After that, more locations will open in the Greater Charlotte area — including spots in Hickory and Indian Land — and a couple locations will open in the Triad, including in Winston-Salem and Greensboro.

Launched in Texas in 1950 as a small burger stand, Whataburger now has more than 1,100 locations across the country. Whataburger is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, and the entry into North Carolina will introduce the 17th state for the brand.

“As someone who lived for years in North Carolina, finally opening our doors here feels like coming home,” Debbie Stroud, Whataburger president and chief executive officer, said in the release. “We’re excited to start making memories together — first bites, first jobs, first dates — and to deliver the Whataburger experience that keeps fans coming back: hot, fresh, and made Just Like You Like It.”
